In times of financial uncertainty, marketing is often the first budget to be cut. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard it dismissed as a “luxury” rather than a necessity.
Don’t we, as the marketing team, just “make things look pretty”? Aren’t we just “the colouring in department”?
From the outside, it might appear that way: a nice logo, a slick website, a well worded social post. It’s not really hard, is it?
But this perspective misses the point, and in doing so many business owners are leaving serious growth potential on the table.
Marketing is Direction
Have you ever considered that marketing is actually business critical?
Marketing isn’t a website or social media. They’re just channels. Marketing, done properly, is strategic. It’s the engine that ensures your business is understood, differentiated and trusted. It defines:
- Who your audience really is
- What makes you different and worth choosing
- How to communicate that difference consistently
- Where to show up and how to generate business growth
It’s not a logo tweak or a prettier brochure. It’s what makes your product or service relevant, desirable and, most importantly of all, profitable.
A Common Misunderstanding
Across my nearly 25 years of working in marketing, I’ve seen a pattern: businesses often invite marketing into the conversation too late. I’ve been told many times by companies that they don’t need marketing as they’re doing well, as if marketing is purely there for lead generation.
But when marketing is misunderstood like this, businesses are leaving themselves vulnerable without even knowing it. Marketing isn’t just lead generation. It helps to:
- Position brands effectively in crowded markets, meaning that growth is more sustainable
- Attract the right customers, not just any customers
- Align business goals with a clear strategy, giving the business more control
- Avoid wasting budget on tactics without strategy
Ensuring Marketing Delivers
I have heard some businesses say that marketing is a waste of money. I’ve found that usually that conclusion comes after a bad experience. Money was spent, but without the right strategy, patience or expertise, the results weren’t there. As with any discipline, if you don’t do it properly and you don’t give it time, it’s going to be tough to make to work.
When reflecting back on what you’ve done before, can you honestly say:
- It was given enough budget
- There was a clear strategy and not just tactics
- It was guided by a marketing professional
- It was given the time it truly needs to deliver
When marketing is respected and empowered, it doesn’t just improve how things look, it improves how everything works, from sales to customer loyalty to bottom line results.
